Speed is one of the most useful signals in a housing market, and also one of the easiest to misread. Let's look at what the 2026 numbers say about how quickly Sioux Falls homes are selling, and what that should change about your plan.

What the Data Shows

Redfin's data for the Sioux Falls metro from January through June 2026 reported a median of about 47 days on market. About 36 percent of homes sold within two weeks, and about 18 percent sold for more than their original list price. The Realtor Association of the Sioux Empire reported an average of 89 days on market for May, two days fewer than a year earlier.

Those two day counts look far apart, and that's normal. Redfin reports a median, which isn't pulled upward by a few slow-moving listings, while the Realtor Association figure is an average, which is. They also cover different time periods and areas. The takeaway isn't to pick one number, it's that the market contains both fast sales and slow ones.

Why Both Fast and Slow Sales Exist at Once

A home that is priced right, shows well, and is in a popular area can draw multiple showings in its first weekend. A home that is priced above what buyers see as value, or needs work, can sit for months. The same market produces both, and the difference is usually the home, not the calendar.

What It Means for Buyers

  • Plan to move quickly on the right home. If roughly a third of homes sell within two weeks, waiting a few days to decide can matter.
  • Have your financing ready. A pre-approval letter turns a good showing into an offer the same day.
  • Don't assume every listing is in demand. A home that has been listed a while may offer room to negotiate.

What It Means for Sellers

  • The first two weeks matter most. That's when your listing gets the most attention.
  • Price to the market. Overpricing is the most common reason homes sit.
  • Prepare before you list. Photos, cleaning, and repairs belong in the plan before the sign goes up.

The Bottom Line

Days on market tells you how buyers are behaving, but it doesn't tell you how your specific home will do. Neighborhood, price range, condition, and timing all change the picture. A current look at comparable homes near you will tell you far more than a metro-wide number.
